Dalia Rawson, the Artistic Director and Executive Director of New Ballet, expressed her inspiration to infuse the spirit of innovation into this beloved classic. “Those of us who live in San Jose and love the city have so much to be proud of,” Rawson shared, emphasizing the desire to create a ballet that reflects the unique character of their hometown.

In this reimagined tale, Clara’s mystical uncle is none other than the legendary Nikola Tesla, bringing the magic of electricity to the story. The stage comes alive with Tesla’s inventions, including a captivating display featuring a Tesla coil.

The production incorporates local elements, replacing traditional cherry blossoms with apricot blossoms and featuring a cameo appearance by a Gilroy garlic harvester. Rawson’s vision extends beyond the dance moves, embracing the essence of the Bay Area.

Backstage, as the dancers prepared for their roles, Rawson highlighted the months of preparation that go into bringing this production to life. Rehearsals begin in September, and the costume department works tirelessly to create and tailor over 100 outfits for the cast.

This year marked a special moment as five dancers took on the role of Clara, each bringing their unique flair to the character. Rawson explained her criteria for casting Clara, emphasizing the need for a dancer with a “special soul” that resonates with the audience.

For Ellis Broderick, who performed as Clara during the preview, being part of “The San Jose Nutcracker” holds a particular significance. “For a lot of people, this is a gateway into the world of ballet,” Broderick shared, acknowledging the potential impact of this performance on those witnessing ballet for the first time.
