The absence of a Women’s United States Championship match on the WWE SummerSlam 2025 card has sparked concern and frustration among fans and wrestlers alike. Notably, Chelsea Green, the first-ever Women’s U.S. Champion, voiced her disappointment over the decision to exclude current titleholder Giulia and the championship from the highly anticipated event.
Background on the Women’s U.S. Championship and Recent Title Changes
Chelsea Green captured the Women’s United States Title in December 2024 and maintained it until she was defeated by Zelina Vega on the April 25 episode of SmackDown. Vega’s reign was relatively brief, as she dropped the title to Giulia on June 27 during the blue brand’s broadcast. Despite the championship changing hands multiple times within a short period, the title has struggled to gain consistent on-screen prominence.
While SummerSlam 2025 will feature a defense of the Women’s Intercontinental Championship from RAW, Giulia’s United States Title will not be contested, leaving the belt off what is typically one of WWE’s biggest pay-per-view events. This distinction has underlined concerns about the creative direction regarding the Women’s U.S. Title.
Chelsea Green Opens Up About Her Disappointment and Hope for the Title
In an interview on The Ringer Wrestling Show, Chelsea Green detailed her frustration with how the Women’s U.S. Title has been handled since her reign. She emphasized the dedication she showed while holding the championship and lamented the diminished status of the title in recent months.

“It definitely makes me upset. I feel like I really put in work with that title. When I first got that title, I did not stop working. I won it before Christmas, I worked through Christmas and literally every single day until I dropped the title. So, it does make me upset. I feel like I laid the groundwork for this title to mean something and unfortunately we’ve taken a step back from that but that’s not the girls’ fault. That’s just a fact that there’s so much good wrestling right now that we don’t even know how to fit in on TV. Am I making excuses? Yes! Because you can always fit something on TV.” —Chelsea Green, Wrestler
Green reflected on the limited television exposure she received, even during her lengthy four-month reign. She pointed out that although she lost many matches and was on TV only briefly each week, the title itself was still featured and acknowledged during broadcasts.
She further expressed support for Giulia, the current Women’s U.S. Champion, encouraging fans to appreciate her achievements regardless of the title’s TV presence.
“I do make sure that every time Giulia shows up on TV, I hype her up. She should still feel amazing for holding that title, whether it’s being used on TV and being defended or not. I do feel like we could do more with it.” —Chelsea Green, Wrestler
Green sees strong potential in Giulia, describing her as an exceptional and talented wrestler, and advocates for a compelling rivalry to elevate the title’s significance again. She specifically mentioned a feud involving Giulia and Zelina Vega, stressing the importance of creating a captivating storyline for viewers.
“She’s such an amazing wrestler, she’s insane. She’s so good. I do feel like there’s something there, I feel like she should feud with Zelina [Vega] but like really feud, like really give us something to tune into. I would be okay feuding with her but I’ve said this before, let me not continue to put my hands where it doesn’t belong.” —Chelsea Green, Wrestler
Although Green acknowledged that she and the current champion are separated by two title holders, she expressed her desire to see Giulia receive the spotlight and fresh challengers from NXT, RAW, or new arrivals to create new rivalries centered around the United States Title.
“We’re two champions removed from me, let her have her moment because I already know people keep talking about my reign with the title because we haven’t really seen much since. Poor Zelina had to feud with me until the end of time, until she lost the title. I just think that Giulia has the platform to possibly have girls come up from NXT or RAW or bring girls in that haven’t been working to feud with her. I just hope we can do that.” —Chelsea Green, Wrestler
Upcoming Title Defense and WWE’s New Creative Directions
As it stands, Giulia is booked to defend her Women’s United States Championship against Zelina Vega on the August 1 episode of SmackDown, offering fans a chance to see the title in action shortly after SummerSlam despite its absence from the pay-per-view event.
Separately, WWE has unveiled some new creative ideas involving Chelsea Green, highlighted in the recent Netflix series WWE: Unreal. The show captured discussions among WWE writers, the creative team, and Triple H, focusing on an unprecedented Royal Rumble finish for Green that could reshape her career trajectory.
This development adds context to Green’s current position in WWE, suggesting that while the Women’s U.S. Title is currently sidelined from major events like SummerSlam, there remains interest in elevating female talent through innovative storytelling and unique match outcomes.
In the broader context of WWE programming, such creative explorations may signal future opportunities for women’s divisions to gain more significant exposure, ensuring championships like the Women’s United States Title receive the attention they deserve in upcoming shows and pay-per-views.
