AJ Styles, a retired WWE star, recently expressed his belief that his daughter could follow in the footsteps of wrestling legend Rey Mysterio, potentially becoming the women’s version of the iconic luchador. Styles shared these thoughts during an episode of What’s Your Story? With Steph McMahon, highlighting his children’s growing interest in professional wrestling.
Rey Mysterio is widely regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers ever, known for his high-flying lucha libre style and his signature 619 move. Despite many luchadors emerging in WWE and other companies, Mysterio remains a benchmark for excellence and legacy in the sport. AJ Styles sees in his daughter both the potential and physical traits reminiscent of Mysterio’s stature and toughness.
AJ Styles on Coaching His Children into Wrestling
During the interview, AJ Styles revealed that he is currently training his second oldest son for a future in wrestling, with the possibility of his eldest son following soon. He has noticed his daughter avidly watching wrestling matches, describing her as small but tough—qualities he associates with Rey Mysterio. Meanwhile, one of his sons shows no interest in sports at all.
“My second oldest [son] is, I’m working with him now, so he’s in it. And then my daughter, I’ve caught her many times watching it. And to the point where I was like, ‘Baby, please turn that off. I just came from work.’ So I think they all got a little bit of it. I think once my second oldest takes off, my oldest [son] will probably end up going that way too.And then who knows if my daughter, my third son, has nothing to do with anything sports whatsoever. He doesn’t care about it. But it wouldn’t surprise me if my daughter got into it. She’d be like the Rey Mysterio of the women’s. She’s tiny, she’s small, but, you know, we’ll see.”
AJ Styles expressed some uncertainty regarding which children would ultimately pursue wrestling, but clearly appreciates their interest and potential.
Changing Perspectives on Wrestling as a Career for His Children
AJ Styles admitted that initially, he did not want any of his children to enter the wrestling world due to the challenges and demands of the profession. However, he now feels that the industry has evolved positively, becoming safer and better managed over the years. This change has made him more open and supportive of his children potentially becoming professional wrestlers.
“I never thought I would want my kids to wrestle. But it’s way different than it’s ever been and a lot better than it’s ever been when it comes to professional wrestling. It’s done right at this point. So I’d be happy if they wrestled.”
This shift in attitude underscores the progress made in professional wrestling’s approach to athlete safety, storytelling, and overall presentation.
Legacy and Impact of Rey Mysterio on Current Wrestlers
Rey Mysterio’s influence on the wrestling world remains strong, as seen in memorable matches including a recent triple threat bout featuring AJ Styles, Edge, and Rey Mysterio himself. Fans continue to appreciate the creative and dynamic performances these wrestlers deliver, with social media highlighting their favorite moments from these events.

What the Future May Hold for the Next Generation
With AJ Styles mentoring his children and observing their passion for wrestling, the possibility of his daughter emerging as a female counterpart to Rey Mysterio presents an exciting prospect. Should she enter the industry, her journey could inspire other young women to pursue wrestling, especially those who identify with the smaller but agile wrestling style Mysterio exemplified.
This potential female Rey Mysterio, backed by parental guidance and a changing industry climate, might carve out her own legacy within professional wrestling, contributing to its ongoing evolution and expanding representation.
