Becky Lynch Gets Emotional Backstage as New SummerSlam Theme Strikes Personal Chord

Published:

Becky Lynch showed a rare emotional side backstage at SummerSlam this month following her successful defense of the Women’s Intercontinental Championship against Lyra Valkyria in a No Count Out, No Disqualification match. The event marked the first-ever two-night SummerSlam Premium Live Event, where Lynch not only secured a vital win but was also deeply moved by the debut of her new entrance theme.

The new song, performed by the rock band The Wonder Years, had a profound personal impact on Lynch. Written with input from her friend and the band’s frontman Dan ‘Soupy’ Campbell, the theme incorporated elements inspired by Lynch’s own life, which brought her to tears after hearing the complete lyrics for the first time at the event.

Creation of a Personal Entrance Theme

Dan Campbell described how he included meaningful references to Lynch’s family within the song‘s lyrics. He specifically mentioned weaving a nod to her daughter Roux in the first verse, a mention of her husband Seth Rollins in the second, and a poignant chorus that honors her late father, who passed away four years ago.

“The lyrics aren’t anywhere yet, but I worked in a reference to Roux [her and Seth Rollins’ daughter] in the first verse, where there’s like a wink to Roux’s name. And then I worked in a reference to Seth in the second verse, and then the chorus references her dad [who passed away four years ago],” he said.

Campbell, who attended SummerSlam with his sons, recounted Lynch’s emotional reaction when meeting them behind the scenes. She was visibly overcome with emotion, expressing how much the song meant to her because her father’s last live wrestling event was SummerSlam.

“We went backstage, and she came up to me crying, and was just like, ‘It just meant so much, because the last time my dad saw me wrestle live was here at SummerSlam.’ That’s what I was looking for. I wanted to make something that was really important to her,” he added.

Why Becky Lynch Chose The Wonder Years for Her New Song

Throughout her career, Becky Lynch had long been associated with her Celtic Invasion entrance theme. However, as Campbell explained, Lynch was eager to signal a new chapter and wanted a fresh sound to match this shift. Despite suggestions from the band to create a typical wrestling entrance tune, Lynch insisted on a track distinctly in The Wonder Years’ style.

“She was like, ‘No, write a Wonder Years Song. I want something very specifically you. There’s a reason I’m asking your band,’” Campbell revealed.

This new theme aligns with the evolving personality Lynch is showcasing in WWE, making it uniquely significant. The song’s personal connections, combined with the band’s artistic freedom in composing it, contribute to its emotional weight and importance for Lynch at this stage in her career.
