Bryan Danielson Reflects on Final Match Pain and Lingering Uncertainty After WrestleDream 2024 Loss

Published:

Bryan Danielson endured significant physical pain during his final match at WrestleDream 2024, where he lost the World Championship to Jon Moxley. The match, which took place in Tacoma, Washington—the site where Danielson saw his first wrestling event—marked the conclusion of his full-time wrestling career, bringing a turbulent chapter to a close.

Danielson revealed that a severe neck injury plagued him throughout his final months, creating intense pain that sometimes led to numbness in his limbs and difficulty sleeping. Although he has not returned to the ring since WrestleDream, he emphasized that his retirement was a decision driven by the toll the injury took on his body.

Reflecting on that night, Danielson expressed relief and gratitude despite the hardships, highlighting the emotional support he received from family and friends.

“I would think the last match that I had, which was in AEW against Jon Moxley in Tacoma, Washington, which is the building that I saw my first ever wrestling match. The main event was the Ultimate Warrior versus Rick Rude. I was ready to be done, I mean, at that point, my neck had been really bad for six plus months and causing me a tremendous amount of pain. I wasn’t sure that I could do what I was kind of being asked to do. My mom was in the front row. We knew it was going to be my last match and as I’m getting choked unconscious, I see my mom in the front row and then just mouth to her that I love you. This whole career that I’ve had wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my family, and then the fact that my mom got to be there for that is really, really cool. It wasn’t just my mom. My high school friends were there. It was just a really, really cool, special thing, just the emotion of knowing, ‘okay, this is the end of this chapter of my life.’ and I’m not sad about it. Happy that I got to experience this whole thing, and almost kind of relieved that it’s over, because I was in so much pain.”

Danielson described how the match’s location was deeply symbolic for him, as it took place in the very venue where he first experienced professional wrestling. The memory of the Ultimate Warrior facing Rick Rude as the main event added to the emotional weight of the evening.

Despite the uncertainty about his ability to perform due to his neck injury, Danielson pushed through the pain with the encouragement of those close to him. Seeing his mother in the front row during those final moments helped him endure the grueling match, and the presence of high school friends made the event even more meaningful.
