WWE Honors Christian Cage’s Iconic SummerSlam Match Ahead of 2025 Event

Published:

Christian Cage’s impactful career in WWE continues to receive recognition as the company commemorates one of his most memorable matches ahead of SummerSlam 2025. Known for his success as a tag team veteran and two-time World Heavyweight Champion, Christian earned a spot in WWE’s recent countdown of the 25 Greatest SummerSlam Matches Ever for his 2011 bout against Randy Orton.

This match, held at SummerSlam 2011, was a No Holds Barred contest in which Christian defended the World Heavyweight Championship against Orton, also known as The Viper. The bout was notable for its intense physicality, with both wrestlers fully utilizing the no disqualification stipulation. The decisive finish came when Orton caught Christian mid-air from a springboard attempt and delivered an RKO onto the steel steps, securing the victory. WWE ranked this match 20th among its greatest SummerSlam encounters, highlighting its lasting significance.

Christian Cage’s WWE Tenure and Transition to AEW

Throughout his near decade-long WWE tenure, Christian excelled in various roles beyond wrestling, including hosting the WWE Network show The Edge and Christian Show That Totally Reeks of Awesomeness alongside his former tag team partner Edge. Despite suffering a concussion that limited his in-ring activity later in his career, Christian made sporadic appearances, most notably as a surprise entrant in the 2021 Royal Rumble match.

Entering at number 24 in the Royal Rumble, Christian briefly reunited with Edge before Seth Rollins eliminated him, marking his last competitive WWE moment. Later that year, Christian signed with All Elite Wrestling (AEW), where he has since formed a stable called The Patriarchy and continues to compete at a high level.

Upcoming AEW World Tag Team Championship Opportunity

Christian’s career is set to continue with a new challenge as he teams up with Nick Wayne for a chance to capture the AEW World Tag Team Championship. Their title shot will take place in a three-way match at the upcoming All In: Texas pay-per-view event. This opportunity underscores Christian’s ongoing relevance and commitment to wrestling outside of WWE, as fans eagerly anticipate his next chapter.
