At a recent panel held during San Diego Comic-Con, WWE star CM Punk shared his thoughts on his final match against Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena. The bout took place during Cena’s retirement tour at the Night of Champions event, where Cena was defending his title. This match marked a significant moment, as it was one of Cena’s last appearances in the ring.
Remembering a Career-Defining Moment
Punk reflected on the importance of this match within the context of his long career and his history with Cena.
“I’ve been fortunate to have a pretty long career filled with a lot of great moments. I think that’s just another one. My storied history with Cena, and for it to be wrapping up for him,”
Punk said.
He also expressed personal emotions tied to Cena’s retirement, revealing how the limited remaining dates made the experience more meaningful.
“I mean, he’s only got, like, 14 to 15 dates left. To be able to be in his orbit during his retirement and get to do fun stuff like that, it meant a lot to me. I’m turning very, very soft in my old age, so I am always just overflowing with gratitude. That moment was absolutely no different. I don’t think anybody expected that. It was a little bit different. It was fun,”
Punk added.
Gratitude for Continued Contribution to Wrestling
Despite stepping away from regular competition, Punk expressed appreciation for still being able to perform at a high level.
“Super grateful I still can do that and contribute at this level…”
he noted. He emphasized the importance of crafting memorable experiences in wrestling, saying,
“Obviously, I think we’re in the business of creating moments. So again, super grateful I still can do that and contribute at this level.”
What This Moment Means for WWE and the Fans
The closing stages of John Cena’s career, highlighted by his final matches including the one against CM Punk, hold emotional weight for both wrestlers and fans. This match not only marked the end of a chapter for Cena but also served as a celebration of the remarkable careers of both athletes. Punk’s reflection underscores the significance of such moments in the world of professional wrestling, where legacies are formed through shared rivalries and unforgettable events.
