CM Punk on Mocking Paul Bearer: Only With Consent

In the months leading up to WrestleMania 29 in 2013, CM Punk took a controversial approach by mocking the late Paul Bearer during his feud with The Undertaker. The storyline ignited strong emotions, but Punk emphasized that he would never have proceeded with it unless everyone involved, including Bearer’s family, was fully supportive. This careful consideration came amid his efforts to embody a villainous character in WWE.

Speaking in a recent interview with Complex News, Punk highlighted the sensitive nature of the angle, explaining the importance of respect when incorporating real-life events into wrestling narratives. Despite not having a close personal bond with Bearer, Punk made sure to obtain approval from those who did, such as Bearer’s son, before bringing the storyline to life.

I mean, it was heavy because while I knew Percy, I didn’t know him or have a connection to him like a lot of people in the company did, like Undertaker did. So I was careful to make sure and his family members, I think his son signed off on it. Cause I was like, I don’t want to do this unless everybody’s okay with it. Because at that time, you know, my, my deal was being a bad guy and trying to just get people to pay to see me beat up. So I wasn’t sure if they were going to be agreeable to, to everything. Cause I, you know, once you give me the green light, like, ‘are you sure about this?’ Like, it’s going to be pretty heavy. I was told by people that were super close to him that he would have loved it, so I can just go by with their their word. But yeah, it was- that’s one of those things. It’s like it’s a privilege and it’s an honor to be able to be respected enough to be handed this gift almost. It’s a shame that he died, obviously, but, to me, it’s the magic of what we do is we can pivot and use real life stuff,  and kind of blur the line. I was grateful that I was allowed to be able to do that.

The Story Behind the Sensitive Storyline

The feud unfolded shortly after the passing of Paul Bearer, a legendary figure closely associated with The Undertaker. Punk, along with Paul Heyman, portrayed a character who disrespected Bearer’s legacy, intensifying the rivalry. Despite the harsh nature of this angle, Punk’s responsibility was to balance the entertainment aspect with empathy for those affected by Bearer’s death.

By seeking permission from Bearer’s family and others who knew him well, Punk ensured that the storyline did not cross personal boundaries. This approach not only showed respect for Bearer’s memory but also demonstrated the professionalism with which wrestling storylines can handle delicate real-life matters. The Undertaker’s eventual revenge in the narrative paid tribute to Bearer, reinforcing the emotional significance of the plot.

Real Life Influence in Wrestling Storylines

CM Punk’s comments underscore the unique capacity of professional wrestling to merge reality with scripted drama. By integrating genuine events, performers can create compelling narratives that resonate deeply with audiences. Punk described this blending of reality and fiction as a “privilege” and “an honor,” highlighting the craft’s power to evoke strong reactions while respecting those involved.

Despite the heaviness of the topic, Punk appreciated being entrusted with the responsibility to portray such a storyline, recognizing the delicate balance between storytelling and honoring real-life legacies. This incident is a reminder of the thoughtfulness often required behind wrestling’s dramatic moments, especially when they involve recently passed personalities.
