World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk recently shared his thoughts on Roman Reigns choosing him as his opponent for WrestleMania 42. Speaking with talkSPORT, Punk expressed relief that Reigns’ choice means he can avoid the Elimination Chamber match and its challenges ahead of the high-profile event.
“I’ve just appreciated that he picked me, so I don’t have to pay any attention to the Elimination Chamber, and I don’t got to worry about who’s in that and who’s winning that. It’s champ problems,”
Punk said.
Balancing Championship Responsibilities and Recovery
Punk explained the weight of carrying the championship going into WrestleMania, acknowledging both the privilege and the pressure it brings. He noted that being the champion spares him from the Royal Rumble and the grueling Elimination Chamber, allowing valuable time to heal his nagging injuries.
“You know, like heading into Mania, being the champion is a lot of responsibility. I feel like it’s great, but it also to me kind of almost takes the target off my back. I don’t have to be in the Rumble. I don’t have to go through hell in the Chamber. So I’m doing my best to rest and recover all the little nagging things I got going on, and I’m sure I’ll see Roman at Mania,”
he explained.
Focus Remains on Finn Balor at the Elimination Chamber
Despite his focus on WrestleMania, Punk emphasized that he is fully committed to his upcoming title defense against Finn Balor at the WWE Elimination Chamber on February 28. The event will be held at the United Center in Chicago, Punk’s hometown, and will stream live on the ESPN App in the United States and on Netflix internationally.
“But I got Finn first at Elimination Chamber. And I don’t take anybody lightly. And Finn is going to find out in my hometown why they love me so much,”
Punk said.
Significance of WrestleMania and Upcoming Challenges
CM Punk’s WrestleMania bout with Roman Reigns highlights a major storyline in WWE, bringing together two of the promotion’s biggest stars. Punk’s comments reveal his strategic mindset in managing the physical toll of defending his title while preparing for elite opponents. The Elimination Chamber match against Finn Balor will serve as an important test in Punk’s hometown, setting the stage for their eventual showdown with Reigns at WrestleMania 42.
