Drew McIntyre Reveals Surprising Truth Behind His Viral WrestleMania Selfie That Broke the Internet

Published:

During WrestleMania 40, Drew McIntyre captured attention not with a dramatic move or surprise appearance, but through an impromptu selfie taken mid-match. This Drew McIntyre WrestleMania selfie, featuring a battered Seth Rollins in the background, quickly went viral and became one of the event’s most talked-about moments. McIntyre recently disclosed how this spontaneous act came to life during his World Heavyweight Championship match against Rollins.

Sharing the story on Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast, McIntyre explained that the idea for the selfie was something entirely unexpected. It emerged just hours before the event itself, with no one aware of the plan beforehand.

“Nobody Knew I Was Going to Do It”

McIntyre recalled,

“Nobody knew I was going to do it… it came about that day,”

adding that while in the gym with a friend before the show, he mused about how cool it would be to tweet during a live match. He said,

“My buddy and I were in the gym… and I was just like, ‘Man, like a match… tweeted, like, during a match, they filmed yourself and then posted it… that was cool.’ And I was like, ‘Someone did it in the match? Imagine, was it Mania?’”

Careful Timing To Maintain Match Integrity

Although the selfie appeared spontaneous, McIntyre emphasized that it was only carried out because it felt natural and would not undermine the flow or seriousness of the match. He stressed the importance of respecting the contest’s integrity and his opponent’s portrayal.

“I’ll never sacrifice the match, the integrity of the match, or my opponent, make them look silly if it doesn’t work. But we’ll have a plan.”

The opportunity arose after McIntyre delivered a suplex to Rollins outside the ring and observed Rollins convincingly selling his injuries.

“He’s got the bad knees going into that match, the bad back, and he’s selling on the floor. And that’s when it’s time. My brother was right there. ‘Give me the phone.’ We did it right there on the fly. They exploded.”

The Viral Reaction and Impact on Social Media

McIntyre had the accompanying tweet prepared in drafts to ensure immediate posting once the moment was captured. The reaction on social media platforms was overwhelming from the outset.

He described the surge in engagement, stating,

“I was getting directly from X, I guess… of the past 60 days when it was posted, in the first hour, it was the most liked… second most liked post in 60 days on X. Of everything.”

This image of McIntyre smiling with Rollins appearing defeated behind him quickly became emblematic of WrestleMania 40, spreading across social media as a defining snapshot of the event.

The Follow-Up and Establishment of a New Persona

At WrestleMania 41, McIntyre revisited this signature move, this time taking a selfie with Damian Priest in the background. This playful moment has evolved into McIntyre’s recognized hallmark: the “Still Bored at Work” selfie.

He spoke about the eventual creation of a t-shirt commemorating the stunt, noting the delay and persistence required.

“It took a while to get it,”

McIntyre said.

“I had to do it two years in a row at WrestleMania… Can I get the t-shirt now? Take a few more months. We finally got it.”

The shirt’s popularity reflects how a last-minute idea transformed into a viral sensation and a fresh, defining aspect of The Scottish Warrior’s wrestling identity.
