He said, “I know that money doesn’t just fall from the sky and that it’s not easy to come by, especially for people living paycheck to paycheck.” He recognized that only some have extra cash on hand. I know how hard it is because I’ve been there.

Johnson and Winfrey first talked about the People’s Fund of Maui on their Instagram pages in August, saying they would each donate $5 million to help start the project. The fund was meant to help people who lost their primary homes in the Kula and Lahaina wildfires by giving them $1,200 monthly.
Johnson’s most current video says that the first group of cash has been sent to thousands of survivors, showing their efforts are paying off.
