Brian James, better known as Road Dogg, recently parted ways with WWE during a crucial period leading up to WrestleMania Vegas. His unexpected exit has raised questions about the future direction of WWE’s creative team, especially since James had served as the head writer for SmackDown. Fans have expressed frustration with the repetitive nature of weekly shows and the promotion’s decision to favor Cody Rhodes over Drew McIntyre for a main event spot, a move some have criticized harshly.
Eric Bischoff Reflects on Road Dogg’s Challenges Within WWE’s Current Creative Structure
Eric Bischoff, Chief Media Officer of Real American Freestyle Wrestling (RAF) and a wrestling industry veteran, discussed Brian James’ recent departure during his 83 Weeks podcast. Bischoff recalled that he replaced James when Road Dogg was initially let go in 2019, noting the difficult working atmosphere under WWE Chairman Vince McMahon at that time. Bischoff admitted that his own tenure lasted only a few months due to the stringent company culture.
According to Bischoff, the collaborative chemistry within a creative team is as important as individual talent. This partly explains why Triple H reinstated James, given their longstanding connection from their days in the D-Generation X (DX) stable. However, Bischoff also pointed out that James’ creative experience is somewhat outdated for WWE’s current corporate setup under TKO ownership, where the environment demands a different style and approach.

Bischoff Suggests Road Dogg Could Revitalize AEW’s Creative Direction
Looking ahead, Bischoff offered his perspective on where Road Dogg’s skills might fit in the professional wrestling world if he desires to continue working behind the scenes. He suggested that All Elite Wrestling (AEW), owned by Tony Khan, could greatly benefit from James’ involvement, especially as AEW seeks to boost its television ratings and overall creative impact.
If he still has the desire to stay involved in creative, personally, I would love to see [Road Dogg] sit down with Tony Khan, because he is exactly what Tony Khan needs. I don’t think that’s going to happen [though], based on what I was told about Tony, and the way he likes to operate, and what his personal goals are. So, that might not fit. But Road Dogg is certainly somebody more than anybody else. If I’m AEW, and I’m kind of hanging on by a thread–the first guy I would want is to get my numbers up, and I would go to someone like Road Dogg, because he would help,” Eric Bischoff said.
Bischoff’s comments underline the potential mutual benefits of such a collaboration. While Tony Khan’s operational style and objectives might differ, Bischoff indicated that Road Dogg’s creative instincts could be exactly what AEW needs to enhance its product and attract a wider audience.
Industry Reactions and Next Steps for Road Dogg
Reports suggest that Road Dogg’s decision to leave WWE was driven by his dissatisfaction with the current creative outlook. Whether he will pursue opportunities such as working with AEW or explore alternative roles within wrestling remains uncertain. Regardless, his departure marks a significant shift at WWE during an intense and highly visible period.
As the wrestling industry watches closely, the involvement of key figures like Vince McMahon, Triple H, Cody Rhodes, and now potentially Tony Khan continues to shape the evolving wrestling landscape. Should Road Dogg align with AEW, it could signal a major development that influences future storylines and ratings battles.
