Hidden Crisis San Jose: The homeless crisis in the South Bay, particularly in San Jose, is a pervasive issue that often remains hidden from the public eye. Encampments and scattered individuals experiencing homelessness contribute to a fragmented perception of the problem. However, a recent Thanksgiving meal program in San Jose brought attention to the sheer scale of the crisis, with a line extending halfway down a city block.
The event, held in St. James Park and sponsored by the outreach group Opening Doors 2020 with support from the City of San Jose, aimed to provide hot meals to those in need. Despite its noon start, the line continued to grow well into the day, stretching along North 2nd Street between East St. James and East St. John streets. This visual perspective offered a unique insight into a problem often obscured from public view.
Individuals awaiting meals took the opportunity to share their stories of homelessness. Some spoke of living on the streets, in tents, or campers. Anthony Holmes, one of the individuals experiencing homelessness, expressed gratitude for the event, emphasizing the importance of having a good meal.

Gelia Archibald echoed the sentiment, stating that without such events, individuals like her would have nothing, given the lack of cooking facilities. The event not only provided hot turkey meals with all the trimmings but also served as a platform for local outreach groups to connect those experiencing homelessness with available resources.
David Hernandez, the executive director of Opening Doors 2020, highlighted the significance of the hot meals provided, comparing them to restaurant-quality dishes. The event shed light on the pressing need for addressing homelessness in San Jose, prompting Mayor Matt Mahan to emphasize the importance of affordable housing and expanded shelter options. He stressed the necessity of offering basic, dignified shelter and connecting individuals to supportive services to effectively tackle homelessness. Overall, the Thanksgiving meal program not only addressed immediate needs but also underscored the broader challenge of homelessness in the region.
