John Aitken Departure: San Jose Aviation Director John Aitken, a stalwart in the aviation industry for 31 years, is gearing up for a well-earned retirement in March. Having climbed the ranks from an airport operations specialist in 1993 to the Director of Aviation in 2017, Aitken leaves behind a legacy of transformative leadership at San Jose Mineta International Airport. In a letter to City Manager Jennifer Maguire, he expressed the difficulty of bidding farewell to a team that witnessed remarkable changes under his guidance.
Aitken played a pivotal role in reopening the airport swiftly after the 9/11 attacks in 2001, making San Jose the first city on the west coast to resume air travel. His tenure also saw the execution of the airport’s $1.3 billion modernization projects in 2010, including the renovation of Terminal A and the expansion of Terminal B.
Maguire lauded Aitken’s forward-thinking leadership, attributing SJC’s pre-COVID status as the fastest-growing airport in the country to his efforts. His influence extends beyond the city, earning him a spot in this year’s Silicon Valley Power 100—a recognition of Silicon Valley’s influential figures.

Before becoming Director in 2017, Aitken was Assistant Director of Aviation from 2015 to 2017 and Deputy Director from 2002 to 2015. He handled major changes like consolidating a rental car business and demolishing Terminal C over two decades. The airport changed its name and logo in 2022.
Aitken’s tenure involved navigating complex decisions, including the delicate balance between downtown building heights and airspace requirements for airport operations. He also fostered partnerships that led to the transformation of one of the city’s largest homeless encampments behind the airport into a park.
A certified commercial pilot and flight instructor, Aitken holds degrees in aviation management and an MBA in aviation management. Currently serving on the board of directors for Joint Venture Silicon Valley, he leaves behind an airport consistently ranked high in national customer experience metrics. The search for his successor has commenced, with hopes of filling the position by March.
Mayor Matt Mahan acknowledged Aitken’s vision and hard work, expressing the city’s gratitude for his impactful leadership as he embarks on a well-deserved retirement.
