CM Punk Opens Up on John Cena Retirement Farewell Tour and His Unexpected Role After WWE Return

Published:

CM Punk and John Cena share a deep history, and Punk recently revealed what he told Cena following the WWE Champion’s retirement announcement at the 2024 Money in the Bank event. Cena’s plans include a farewell tour marking the end of his wrestling career, and Punk expressed a desire to be involved in that journey. Their last in-ring clash took place at Night of Champions, where Cena, playing the role of a heel for the first time, successfully defended his title.

In an interview with India Today, CM Punk disclosed that the moment Cena announced his retirement in Toronto, he immediately approached him with an offer to participate in the farewell tour in any way possible.

“Night Of Champions was a really important night for me personally and professionally and emotionally. Yeah, that’s it (on Cena rivalry). John to me has written his own ticket. John can do whatever he wants. I told him, I think it was a year ago, I saw him for the first time in a while, and he announced in Toronto he was gonna retire and he was gonna do X amount of dates,” said CM Punk.

“And I immediately I grabbed him and I said, ‘hey I don’t know if I figure into your plans, whatever you want to do, but man, I’m your Huckleberry. To me, selfishly, I wanna be a part of it. So, you want me on commentary for one of your matches, you want me to be a referee, I’ll drive you to the shows, buddy, like, whatever it takes to get me to be a small part of your story because he was such a big part of mine. And yeah, that was it,” said Punk.

Upcoming Title Opportunity for CM Punk at WWE SummerSlam

Although CM Punk did not capture the WWE Championship at the Night of Champions event in Saudi Arabia, he remains in the title hunt. Recently on RAW, he earned his spot as the number one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship by winning a grueling gauntlet match. This victory sets up a high-stakes showdown against Gunther at SummerSlam, one of WWE’s most prominent events held at The Grandest Stage of Them All.

Both Punk and Gunther are regarded as top-tier stars within WWE, and their upcoming match promises intense competition with only one emerging as the new World Heavyweight Champion. The outcome will significantly impact the trajectory of both wrestlers’ careers.

The Importance of Cena’s Farewell and Punk’s Role Moving Forward

John Cena’s retirement farewell tour is a major moment in professional wrestling, marking the close of a storied chapter for one of WWE’s most iconic figures. CM Punk’s willingness to support Cena in multiple capacities, from commentary to refereeing, underscores the respect and bond between these two stars, despite their intense rivalry. Punk’s role in this farewell tour, whether visible on commentary or backstage, highlights his continued influence in WWE beyond direct competition.

As Cena steps closer toward the end of his wrestling career, having Punk involved ensures that the story being told honors their shared past. Meanwhile, Punk’s pursuit of the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam signals his own ambitions to secure further legacy-defining moments in WWE’s evolving landscape.
