John Cena recently disclosed the meaningful advice he received from William Regal following his final wrestling match. Speaking on the No Contest Wrestling podcast, Cena reflected on the influence Regal had on his early career and the wisdom Regal shared with him backstage.
Cena expressed deep admiration for Regal’s wrestling style, describing him as a European talent with a technical approach reminiscent of Fit Finley’s catch-as-catch-can method. He recounted how he once sought Regal’s feedback after a lesser-known dark match during his WWE beginnings.
Early Career Feedback That Resonated for Years
When Cena asked Regal if he had seen his match and requested his opinion, Regal replied bluntly:
“Lad, if you get yourself a pair of boots, at least you’ll look like a proper wrestler.”
At the time, Cena took this comment literally, believing his priority was simply to obtain wrestling boots. He remembered thinking,
“Yo, I just got to get boots! Invest in yourself is what I took away from it.”
Years later, on the night Cena retired, the veteran Regal approached him once again, stating,
“Even without boots, you’re still a proper wrestler.”
Cena described this moment as a significant callback that spanned 25 years, showing how one sentence can have a lasting impact amid a busy day.
Reflections Following Cena’s Retirement and New Projects Ahead
These reflections came just over two months after Cena’s official retirement, marked by his submission loss to Gunther on the December 13, 2025 episode of Saturday Night’s Main Event. Since retiring, Cena has launched the second season of his Roku Channel series, What Drives You with John Cena, which debuted on January 16, 2026, with four episodes.
Beyond wrestling and television, Cena is set to appear in the comedy film Little Brother alongside Eric Andre, planned for release later this year. His enduring connection to the wrestling world and ongoing presence in entertainment continue to keep fans engaged.
