AEW wrestler Johnny TV, known formerly as John Morrison, recounted his unexpected win of the ECW World Title at WWE Vengeance 2007 during an interview with Insight with Chris Van Vliet. The event held in June 2007 became notable not only because Johnny TV defeated CM Punk for the championship, but because he stepped in after Chris Benoit was unable to compete due to a tragic incident. Johnny TV reflected on the complex feelings surrounding this turning point in his career and the circumstances leading to his title victory.
Unplanned Participation and Sudden Opportunity
Originally, Chris Benoit was slated to face CM Punk at WWE Vengeance. However, Benoit never arrived at the event following the tragic deaths of his wife and son, and his subsequent suicide at his Atlanta home. Johnny TV described being on standby and not initially scheduled for the main ECW match. He explained,
“No, I was like a standby. I was booked to be there, maybe have a dark match, I don’t know. So, say call time is 1 pm, everything’s fine. I’m just in catering. Around 3 pm, I hear Chris Benoit hasn’t showed up, and if he doesn’t show up, I might need to fill in or something. Okay, sure he’ll be there though, it’s Chris. 4:30, 5 pm, me and Mordecai, Kevin Thorne, get called into talent relations, the two of us, and we’re told, ‘Hey, can’t get hold of Chris Benoit. He’s not here, and if he’s not here in another hour or two, it’s going to be one of you two guys versus CM Punk. We don’t want to let the crowd down by having the replacement lose. So whoever it is between you two is gonna win.’ So kind of like both looked at each other like, I hope it’s me.”
Uncertainty and Rising Pressure Before the Match
Johnny TV recalled not knowing who had decided that he would win the title, but acknowledged that he had been featured on television more regularly than some others at that time. He described the anxious hours leading up to the match, pacing and checking the parking garage, hoping Benoit would not show. He said,
“I don’t know who made that decision with that call, but I’d had a lot more TV time consistently than he had up to that point. Whoever made that decision? Thank you. I agree. Good call. So we have that talk, and then I spend the next two hours pacing, hoping that Chris Benoit does not show up. Walked out to the parking garage a couple of times, just to see if I saw a car coming. I didn’t.”
Johnny TV detailed preparing himself mentally as the pay-per-view began and stepping into the ring against CM Punk, with whom he developed strong chemistry in subsequent matches that followed this initial encounter.

The Emotional Weight Following the Tragedy
The day after winning the ECW World Title, Johnny TV was confronted with the devastating news about Chris Benoit. He expressed the conflicted feelings that arose from benefiting professionally in the aftermath of a tragedy. Johnny TV said,
“Then the next day, we get the news about Benoit and what happened. I felt like crap. I felt so guilty just for being happy with something that came to be because of the tragedy we’ve heard about and talked about ad nauseum. It’s still tough for me to be happy about how everything came about. I’m happy that I got that match and my career took a huge turn upwards because of everything. It’s just a very confusing thing to benefit from a tragedy, even if you really had nothing to do with it.”
He also reflected on his past interactions with Benoit, recognizing Benoit’s respect toward him as a passionate wrestler and candidly acknowledging the complicated emotions tied to the incident.
Johnny TV’s Perspective on the Legacy of His Championship Win
Addressing whether his title victory feels overshadowed by the events surrounding it, Johnny TV stated,
“I’ve never thought about it in those terms. The only thing that I think about is I feel guilty about being so happy and excited because I didn’t know what had happened. I don’t care if it’s a footnote or not. What happened after it is more meaningful to me anyway.”
This viewpoint highlights the ongoing struggle to reconcile personal success with the tragedy that unexpectedly shaped its context.
Broader Context and Continued Reflection
The incident involving Chris Benoit’s tragedy remains a significant and somber chapter in professional wrestling history. The story is extensively documented in the television series Dark Side of the Ring Season 3, which explores the difficult and complex circumstances around the event. Series creators Evan Husney and Jason Eisener have contributed to preserving this account, emphasizing its lasting impact on the wrestling community and industry.
Johnny TV’s candid reflections offer insight into the emotional and professional complexities wrestlers face when moments of triumph become forever linked with tragedy. His experience underscores how unforeseen events can redefine careers and evoke deeply conflicted responses, themes that continue to resonate within wrestling and among its fans.
