Since joining All Elite Wrestling (AEW) at its inception in 2019, Kenny Omega has held a significant Executive Vice President position, working alongside The Young Bucks and Cody Rhodes under Tony Khan’s leadership. As a former IWGP Heavyweight Champion and AEW World Champion, Omega’s influence extends beyond his in-ring achievements, embodying both a competitive presence and a strategic figure within the company.
Though recent setbacks, including an injury and a loss to Andrade El Idolo, have interrupted his pursuit of the AEW World Championship, Omega continues to focus on his evolving role within AEW’s landscape, balancing his contributions inside and outside the ring as the company pushes forward.
Shifting Focus Toward AEW’s Next Generation
In an exclusive with Justin Barrasso of Undisputed, Kenny Omega spoke candidly about how he views his place in AEW now that many of his personal aims have been fulfilled. He described himself as aiming to be a “utility tool” for whatever the company needs, signaling a shift from personal accolades to broader responsibilities.
“I’m in a position where a lot of my own personal goals are out of the way. I’ve checked all those boxes. The one personal goal I have left is to be the best utility tool for what the situation calls for.”
With an eye toward AEW’s future, Omega emphasized the importance of nurturing new talent to avoid stagnation. He acknowledged the allure of continuing as a main event star but stressed that his greater mission is facilitating the rise of upcoming performers who can sustain the company’s momentum.
“Maybe I could main event until I’m dead. But what follows after if I haven’t built anybody, or if I haven’t had a hand in helping the next generation rise up? That’s more so my role now than it’s ever been. We need to trust our future. There are people who need these experiences. They need to learn and evolve as performers. We can’t keep relying on the same small-knit group of people that have a track record of success. We need to be cognizant of what we’re doing moving forward.”
Balancing Championship Ambitions with Legacy Building
While Omega has not dismissed the possibility of recapturing the AEW World Championship, he revealed a sense of pride in being able to contribute effectively without the belt defining him. This reflects his dedication to fostering an environment where other talents can rise and carry the company.
“If for some reason, whether it be the fans or the wrestling world in general, there is a want and a desire for me to have one more title run, then I’ll push myself to get there. I also take pride in not needing to be there. I want to be in a position where I can say that I helped create an environment where all these guys have risen to the call and the challenge of being able to carry the company. I would love that. But if people are calling for it, for me to step up and be that guy, then I’ll do my best.”
His remarks underline a commitment to balance personal ambition with the broader growth and sustainability of AEW’s talent pool.
AEW’s Strategic Vision for Ongoing Success
Kenny Omega’s evolving role in AEW illustrates the company’s broader strategy to transition from reliance on established stars to cultivating fresh main event talent. By stepping into a mentorship and leadership position, Omega aims to ensure AEW remains competitive and dynamic in the wrestling industry for years to come.
His approach signals a recognition that a promotion’s longevity depends on developing new performers capable of connecting with audiences and sustaining high-level competition, rather than depending solely on veteran names.
As AEW continues to grow under the guidance of Tony Khan and its executive leadership, Omega’s position as a versatile player and mentor serves as a bridge between the company’s early successes and its future ambitions.
