Kota Ibushi, once the IWGP Heavyweight Champion, has faced significant injury setbacks over the past few years, having competed in fewer than twenty matches during the last five years. After his return to AEW in mid-2025, hopes rose for a full comeback. Unfortunately, in an October bout against Josh Alexander, Ibushi suffered a broken femur, an injury initially expected to sideline him for as long as two years. Despite this prognosis, Ibushi has expressed optimism about returning far sooner.
Recovery Progress and Optimism for a Quicker Return
In an uncommon interview with HypeTalkTV, Ibushi discussed the difficulty of his recovery, sharing that while walking has become manageable, running remains off-limits. He acknowledged the severity of the surgery, saying,
“The surgery…it was really painful,”
and added,
“Now, walking is okay, but running I can’t do. The doctor said a year, but I’ll do it in half that. Yes, in six months…in AEW is fine. Just–sometimes or once, I want to do like an ‘easy match.’”
This determination highlights his strong will to rejoin AEW’s roster sooner than anticipated, even if it means easing back into competition.
Ibushi’s Recent Appearance and Commitment to Full Recovery
Ibushi made a surprise appearance at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20, participating in Hiroshi Tanahashi’s retirement ceremony. During the event at the Tokyo Dome, he was clearly still recovering, struggling to walk down the ramp. However, Ibushi emphasized his goal to return only when fully healed, stating,
“I will heal my leg as fast as possible and come back to the ring. I want to come back quickly as possible, as soon as possible. Yes, I will return to the ring in perfect condition as soon as possible. I want everyone to know that.”
Unrealized AEW Plans Before Injury
Before the injury, Ibushi was set to participate in a major AEW tag team match at Full Gear 2025 alongside his Golden Lovers partner Kenny Omega. The Young Bucks revealed on Being The Elite that they had planned to wrestle Ibushi and Omega in a rematch of their 2018 NJPW encounter, a highly anticipated bout that was ultimately scrapped due to Ibushi’s injury.
Future Implications of Ibushi’s Return
Kota Ibushi’s projected return in roughly six months holds significant importance for AEW fans and the wrestling community, as it promises the comeback of an acclaimed performer whose career has been hindered by injuries. If successful, his early return could inspire hope for other wrestlers facing long recoveries and renew excitement for potential future matches with prominent talents like Kenny Omega. This update also underscores Ibushi’s resilience and dedication to his craft despite ongoing challenges.
