Kota Ibushi Bio

Kota Ibushi (飯伏幸太, Ibushi Kōta; born May 21, 1982) is a Japanese professional wrestler and martial artist currently signed to All Elite Wrestling (AEW). Standing 181 cm tall and competing at 93 kg, Ibushi has been a fixture of Japanese professional wrestling for more than two decades, working across DDT Pro-Wrestling (DDT), New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), and AEW. Over the course of his career he has held the KO-D Openweight Championship three times, the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship three times, and the IWGP Heavyweight Championship once, establishing himself as one of the most versatile performers in the modern era.

Early Life and Background

Kota Ibushi was born on May 21, 1982, in Aira, Kagoshima, Japan. He grew up in the city during the 1980s and 1990s, where he developed an early interest in combat sports. As a young athlete, Ibushi practiced karate and built a foundation in striking arts that would later influence his professional wrestling style.

Prior to entering professional wrestling, Ibushi competed in amateur martial arts and won a shinkarate K-2 tournament in 2003. That same period shaped his transition into pro wrestling, and he soon aligned himself with Japanese independent wrestling, eventually making his way into the training system run by Kyohei Mikami and Shuji Kondo.

Path to Professional Wrestling

Ibushi received his in-ring training under Kyohei Mikami and Shuji Kondo, who helped guide him through the early stages of his career. He made his professional debut on July 1, 2004, in DDT Pro-Wrestling, where he lost to Kudo. The DDT system, known for its theatrical style, gave Ibushi a foundation in high-flying moves, character work, and athletic versatility.

His path to national prominence began when he captured his first KO-D Tag Team Championship in 2005 with Daichi Kakimoto. By 2009, Ibushi had begun crossing over into New Japan Pro-Wrestling, where he competed in the Best of the Super Juniors tournament and eventually signed a full-time contract in 2013. That crossover positioned him to become one of the few wrestlers to headline for both DDT and NJPW at the highest level.

Kota Ibushi Career

Early Career (2004–2009)

Ibushi spent his formative years establishing himself across the Japanese independent circuit, including runs in Dragondoor, El Dorado Wrestling, Ring of Honor, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, and Chikara. He adopted several ring names during this era, including Hustle Kamen Orange, Oda Nobunaga, Robin Mask, and Sammy Lee Jr., which reflected his willingness to experiment with different characters.

During this developmental stretch, Ibushi won the 2009 Rey de Voladores tournament at Chikara and began a long-running tag team partnership with Kenny Omega known as the Golden☆Lovers. On January 24, 2009, the pair defeated Harashima and Toru Owashi for the KO-D Tag Team Championship, marking one of the first major highlights of his in-ring career.

DDT Pro-Wrestling Breakthrough (2004–2016)

Ibushi’s DDT career built him into a main event star in Japan. He captured the KO-D Openweight Championship on three occasions and the KO-D Tag Team Championship five times, with two of those tag team reigns coming alongside Kenny Omega. Their combined reign total of 351 days remains a DDT record. Ibushi also added two KO-D 6-Man Tag Team Championships during this stretch.

Beyond DDT, Ibushi extended his reach into mixed martial arts. He planned a K-1 MAX debut in 2006 that was cancelled due to his opponent’s injury, and in November 2014 he made his shoot boxing debut in an exhibition match against Michael Nakazawa that ended in a draw. On February 21, 2016, Ibushi announced his resignation from DDT, closing a twelve-year chapter with the promotion.

NJPW Breakthrough (2009–2016)

Ibushi first entered New Japan Pro-Wrestling by competing in the 2009 Best of the Super Juniors tournament. He continued appearing in NJPW events while working as a freelancer and DDT representative, and on October 11, 2010, he and Kenny Omega defeated Apollo 55 for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship. On June 18, 2011, after winning the 2011 Best of the Super Juniors, Ibushi defeated Prince Devitt to capture the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship for the first time.

Ibushi won the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship three times in total and remained a regular contender at NJPW’s biggest events. On January 4, 2014, at Wrestle Kingdom 8, he defeated Devitt for the title, and he later transitioned into the heavyweight division. He won the 2015 New Japan Cup, which led to an IWGP Heavyweight Championship challenge against A.J. Styles. After being sidelined by a cervical disc herniation in November 2015, Ibushi announced his resignation from NJPW in February 2016.

Freelance Era (2016–2018)

As a freelancer, Ibushi appeared in DDT, NJPW, Evolve, Inoki Genome Federation, Wrestle-1, and Kaiju Big Battel. He also participated in WWE’s 2016 Cruiserweight Classic, defeating Sean Maluta, Cedric Alexander, and Brian Kendrick before being eliminated in the semifinals by T. J. Perkins. He also took part in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, where he partnered with Hideo Itami and later T. J. Perkins before being eliminated by Sanity.

During this freelance run, Ibushi also worked under the Tiger Mask W gimmick from late 2016 into 2017, wrestling at NJPW events including Wrestle Kingdom 11. He returned to NJPW in June 2017 for the G1 Climax and went on to defeat Cody at Wrestle Kingdom 12. By mid-2018, Ibushi and Kenny Omega had reunited the Golden☆Lovers tag team and formed The Golden☆Elite alongside the Young Bucks.

Return to NJPW Era (2019–2023)

On February 11, 2019, Ibushi announced he was staying in NJPW on a new two-year deal. He defeated Tetsuya Naito at G1 Supercard to win the IWGP Intercontinental Championship, then went on to win the 2019 G1 Climax and the 2020 G1 Climax, becoming the only wrestler to win both the Best of the Super Juniors, the New Japan Cup, and the G1 Climax. On February 21, 2020, Ibushi and Hiroshi Tanahashi, billed as Golden☆Ace, won the IWGP Tag Team Championship.

On January 4, 2021, at Wrestle Kingdom 15, Ibushi defeated Tetsuya Naito to win the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Championships. At the NJPW 49th Anniversary Show on March 4, 2021, he defeated El Desperado to unify those titles and become the inaugural IWGP World Heavyweight Champion. He lost the unified title to Will Ospreay at Sakura Genesis on April 4, 2021, ending his reign at 31 days. Ibushi’s NJPW contract expired on February 1, 2023, making him a free agent once again.

All Elite Wrestling Era (2023–Present)

Ibushi made his AEW debut on the July 20, 2023, episode of Blood & Guts, where he reunited with Kenny Omega as part of The Golden Elite. AEW President and CEO Tony Khan announced on November 15, 2023, that Ibushi had signed with the promotion. After nearly two years off television, Ibushi returned on the June 21, 2025 episode of Collision to confront Kazuchika Okada.

On June 25, 2025, Ibushi made his AEW singles in-ring return, defeating Trent Beretta. At AEW All In, he competed in the men’s Casino Gauntlet match and accompanied Omega for his match against Okada.
