Mark Briscoe Opens Up on Parenting Nine Kids and Keeping ‘Procreation’ a Running AEW Gag

Published:

Mark Briscoe, known for his wrestling career, is the father of eight children with a ninth on the way, an aspect of his life explored in the AEW and The Player’s Tribune documentary Two In One: The Briscoe Story. The film highlights how the Briscoe family, including Mark and his relatives, have been coping and healing after the tragic death of Jay Briscoe, Mark’s brother, in a car accident in 2023.

In an interview with WrestleZone’s Managing Editor Bill Pritchard, Mark discussed his large family and how the arrival of his ninth child places him on track humorously to form a baseball team. When questioned about how the family arrived at having nine children, Briscoe joked about the natural progression of starting a family while acknowledging the blessings that come with being a father.

We’re just going along the natural course of how everything goes with a man and a woman. And I guess there are medications or procedures that can be done to slow down the procreation. But, as of now, we got a pretty good pace going,

Briscoe quipped.

Number nine. Who knows, moving forward from there. But yeah, we… There’s never a dull moment. I’ll put it that way.

Parenting Nine Children: Mark Briscoe Reflects on the Experience

Mark Briscoe reflected on his parenting journey, revealing a pause he took after having his fourth child, before deciding to expand his family further. Initially, parenting was challenging with the youngest children moving through diapers and the difficult toddler years, but as his older children grew more independent, managing the household became increasingly manageable.

His family expanded to include three daughters and several sons, with the older girls stepping in to help care for their younger siblings. Briscoe described how having teenagers in the house has eased the strain of looking after so many children, as they act as reliable babysitters when Mark and his wife need to run errands or step out.

But the three girls are like, built-in baby-sitters, man! They are like little mini mommies. Because they’re getting in their teenage years now. So, they can babysit. We got to run out to the store, want to run down to whatever, Walmart, whatever it may be to tell the girls, ‘Hey, Marl, you are babysitting. Hey, Rye, you are babysitting. Mike, you’re babysitting.’ It’s very easy [now], where in the past we would have to coordinate, line up a babysitter or bring the babies along with us.

Origin of the ‘Word of the Day’ Gimmick in AEW

Aside from his home life, Mark Briscoe also shared insights into a popular running gag among AEW fans known as the ‘Word of the Day.’ The spontaneous idea took off without planning, starting with the word “conglomeration” and quickly turning into a recurring humorous element during his appearances.

Briscoe explained that the gag’s success stemmed from its organic nature and the enjoyment it brought to both the performers and the audience, making it a staple that viewers looked forward to regularly.

Everybody got a kick out of it. And so, we all were like, ‘So, what is the word of the day today?’ ‘Well, how about blah blah blah.’ Whatever it may be. And I mean it was just so as organic as it possibly could have been. It was not… It wasn’t anything but it just happened. And it was just fun. And we were just all just enjoying it. And yeah, people were enjoying it and people were making comments over the word of the day. ‘I wonder what the next word of the day is going to be?’ So, if it ain’t broke, ain’t no need to trying and fix it,

Mark Briscoe said.
