WWE Hall of Famer Paul Heyman shared insights into the 1999 partnership between Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) and Acclaim Entertainment, a deal influenced by the shifting landscape of wrestling video games. This announcement came ahead of the WWE 2K26 release, featuring World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk on its cover for a second time.
How the Deal Between ECW and Acclaim Came to Be
After the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) transitioned its video game license to THQ in June 1998, Acclaim quickly seized the opportunity to partner with ECW. According to Heyman, Acclaim aimed to
“strike the iron while it was hot.”
The agreement was finalized in October 1999, leading to the release of the first ECW title, ECW Hardcore Revolution, in 2000.
Development and Outcome of ECW Video Games
Following the unexpectedly strong performance of ECW Hardcore Revolution, Acclaim hastily produced a follow-up game called ECW Anarchy Rulz. This sequel introduced an expanded roster and new match types. Unfortunately, the partnership was cut short when ECW declared bankruptcy in early 2001, ending the collaboration abruptly.
Paul Heyman’s Experience Writing for Wrestling Games
Beyond his role as ECW’s promoter, Heyman has contributed storyline writing for WWE video games. He reflected that crafting narratives for games is less complex than scripting for wrestling television, as the latter requires managing the distinct personalities involved in the live environment.
