Restoring the Historic San José Theater: Important restoration work has been underway in the historic San José theater building since December 2022, coinciding with its centenary celebration. The extensive renovation project encompasses the renewal of the roof tiles, structural insulation, and essential repairs to preserve one of the town’s oldest and most cherished landmarks.
The restoration journey commenced with the meticulous process of dismantling and cleaning the larch shingle roof, which exhibited varying degrees of wear and tear. In some sections, the original shingles had been replaced with wood from other native species, which were also removed.
Following this, the support planking underwent thorough repairs, and a membrane, along with nails, were meticulously applied. Subsequently, the insulation was expertly executed through cellulose injection. The final phase of roof restoration involved the placement of raulí tiles, sourced from the Trompul area in the Cayún community. These tiles were crafted using traditional methods under the skillful guidance of carpenter Luis Gaete, a Valdivia native. Prior to installation, the tiles were soaked in water, a technique previously proven successful during the restoration of the Van Doersser building in Hua Hum, with results lasting over 15 years. The restoration project was funded by IJAN, and it was overseen by architect María Victoria Neira.
This extensive restoration effort not only pays homage to the theater’s rich history but also ensures its continued significance as a cultural treasure in the town.
