Rey Mysterio Shares Optimistic Injury Recovery Update, Hopes WWE Return by August

Published:

Rey Mysterio provided a hopeful Rey Mysterio injury recovery update this week, confirming steady progress in his rehabilitation and setting his sights on a potential WWE return by August. The former world champion shared new details about his journey during an appearance on La Platica, describing both his ongoing physical therapy and his eagerness to rejoin WWE following a recent setback.

Physical Therapy Underway After Groin Tear

Mysterio began his recovery after tearing his groin during a six-man tag match on SmackDown, which occurred the night before WrestleMania 41 in April. The injury forced him to withdraw from his scheduled marquee match against El Grande Americano at the major event, leaving fans and fellow wrestlers disappointed. In his interview, Mysterio explained that his rehabilitation is well underway, with a focus on physical therapy and addressing additional health concerns:

“Yeah, man. I started my [physical therapy]. Not to mention, I had a busted eardrum as well, so I fixed that during my time off. I’m on the road to recovery. I should be back hopefully by August.”

Injury Occurred During Routine In-Ring Action

The veteran wrestler clarified that the injury did not happen during a high-risk maneuver but was instead the result of a standard move mid-match. Detailing the moment, Mysterio recounted how the routine action led to a severe groin tear:

“I stepped in the ring, the guy that I was wrestling stood in front of me, he bailed out the ring underneath the bottom rope and I went to chase him. And when I pushed off with my left leg, I just heard a [tear],”

“Like, ‘That’s it? I tore my groin like that?’ Yeah, usually it happens on the simplest sh*t. But with all the stuff that I do, you would always think that it’s something crazy. No, it’s always the opposite. Always the small stuff.”

Reflections on Career Longevity and Family

Mysterio, who turned 50 this year, acknowledged in his conversation with La Platica that retirement feels much closer, but his passion for wrestling and energy from the fans remain strong. He shared that his son’s entry into the wrestling world, Dominik Mysterio, has reinvigorated his own career. Though Dominik is also recovering from injury, his absence from the ring is expected to be brief.

Public Appearances Amid Recovery

Earlier in June, Mysterio attended WWE and AAA’s Worlds Collide event, where he delivered an opening promo that celebrated the growth and significance of lucha libre in professional wrestling. His continued involvement with fans and major events highlights both his ongoing commitment to the industry and his enduring popularity.

As he continues his physical therapy, the wrestling community remains attentive to Mysterio’s progress. If his Rey Mysterio injury recovery update stays on track, fans can look forward to seeing him back in WWE action as soon as August.
