During a recent podcast appearance, Rey Mysterio opened up about how his son, Dominik Mysterio, approached him about pursuing a career in professional wrestling. Rey and his wife were initially surprised but supported Dominik’s decision to follow his passion. The conversation also touched on Dominik’s neck tattoo, which Rey humorously explained was inspired by his own plans to get inked.
Dominik’s Growth and Individual Path in Wrestling
Rey reflected on his son’s evolution in the wrestling world, highlighting how Dominik has developed into his own unique competitor while carrying forward the family legacy. He expressed the belief that Dominik might surpass him one day though in a different manner. Rey also shared a lighthearted observation from his wife, who predicted Dominik would take on a villainous role in wrestling even before his debut, revealing a side of Dominik that Rey himself had not fully seen due to his frequent absence on the road.
“I pretty much have seen more than I could imagine, with the growth of Dom and his evolution here in the sport. And how he’s grown, and how he’s become his individual self, and then the place that he’s carrying and taking the name to. Which I always, deep down inside, thought that he would be bigger and better than me in a different way. And I guess this is the way. Which is also funny ’cause my wife said that if he ever wrestled, that she always saw him as a bad guy. And here is, [laughs] here is the bad guy, that my wife — obviously spent way more time with him than I did, because I was always on the road. So I guess she saw a side of him that I am now seeing. [laughs] Obviously I didn’t know.”

How Dominik Made the Decision to Wrestle
Rey explained that Dominik’s path to wrestling was gradual. Although Dominik loved wrestling as a child, he explored other interests like football. It was only around 19 years old, when he felt uncertain about his future, that he decided to seriously pursue wrestling. Despite initially not fully knowing what wrestling would entail, Dominik committed himself to learning and developing his skills, leading to his current status in WWE.
“I get this question asked a lot, ‘Did you ever insist on Dom to follow in your footsteps?’ Yeah I mean, he loved it as a kid. And then eventually like every other kid, grew out of it and then wanted to play football and do this and do that. And it’s not until he got older, 19 years old, that he had nowhere else to go or what to do. And he said, ‘Well I wanna see if I could make it in wrestling.’ I don’t even think he knew what he wanted to do exactly. But it was there. He learned, he captured it, he focused, and that’s the end result, right now.”

The Story Behind Dominik’s Neck Tattoo
Rey revealed the humorous backstory of Dominik’s neck tattoo, noting that his son decided to get inked quickly after overhearing Rey mention his own plans for a tattoo. The design carries special meaning as it pays tribute to Rey’s uncle, whose wrestling mask inspired Rey’s love for the sport. According to Rey, the tattoo holds deep personal significance and reflects what a tattoo should represent.
“I think he overheard me saying that I was going to get a neck tattoo and he jumped right to it so that way he can say my dad copied me. My deadbeat dad. No, I love the fact that he’s paying homage to my uncle, the person that — I fell in love with the sport because of him. I grew up watching him, my life has always been wrestling because of my uncle and that was the very first mask that he designed and wore. So it’s special, and it has meaning to it. Which is what a tattoo should have, right?”

Randy Orton Looks Ahead to Challenging WWE’s Rising Stars
In other WWE news, veteran Randy Orton expressed enthusiasm for competing against emerging talent like Je’Von Evans and Trick Williams in the upcoming 2026 Men’s Elimination Chamber match. With this being his tenth time participating in the Chamber, Orton anticipates facing younger wrestlers who represent the future of WWE as they all vie for a world title shot at WrestleMania.
Orton described the upcoming match as a unique opportunity to test his abilities against the new generation while acknowledging his own desire to remain a top competitor. He mentioned his ongoing rivalry with Cody Rhodes as a significant element leading into WrestleMania.
“They’re all great talents. I think that whenever I can get a chance to get my hands on the younger talent, that’s always been more fun for me. They’re the future, and to get in there with them and mix it up with them. Je’Von Evans, I mean, he’s an amazing athlete. I’ve been in there with him before. Trick Williams, same goes for him. Both these guys are awesome. But Cody Rhodes and I have quite the history, so it’s gonna be an interesting night, and it leads to WrestleMania, man. This, like I said, we’ve only got so much gas left in the tank, and I plan on going to WrestleMania, main eventing WrestleMania, and becoming 15-time World Champion.”
