Before embarking on his professional wrestling journey in 2017, Ridge Holland built a solid foundation through over ten years in rugby. During a recent discussion on The Mike Rand Show, Holland shared insights about his upbringing in a small working-class town in the UK, where rugby league was a significant part of community life and a popular sport among youth. His introduction to the game came early, encouraged by his father’s passion for amateur rugby.
Early Exposure and the Influence of Family
Holland explained how his father’s involvement in rugby motivated him from a young age. He recalled,
“Being from a small working-class town, you either grew up and wanted to be a policeman, a bricklayer, get a trade, or you played sports. A big sport in my area was Rugby league. My dad played amateur, never played pro. But he kind of nudged me in that direction. When I was like seven, eight, he said, ‘Okay, let’s sign you up for a grassroots club.’ I started playing rugby. Fell in love with it. Obviously, I wanted to impress my dad. There’s a bit of validation there.”

This strong family connection helped set a clear path for Holland, blending his personal ambition with his desire to gain his father’s approval through his dedication to the sport.
Breaking into Professional Rugby at a Young Age
Holland’s commitment led to an early professional debut at just 17 years old, an achievement that, while somewhat typical within the UK rugby scene, is striking compared to sports culture in the United States. He said,
“I happened just to turn professional at the age of 17. It’s kind of common in the UK, but unheard of over here in the States. So, I was playing professionally against grown men at 17 years old. It’s like a 17-year-old going to play in the NFL. So yeah, I played my debut at 17. I had 12 good years playing professional rugby for quite a few clubs over the north of England. It was a good experience.”

These years competing at a high level gave him valuable physical and mental resilience, which later translated into his wrestling career.

In the same interview, Holland touched briefly on his recent surgeries and recovery progress, signaling ongoing challenges in his wrestling career. Though details remain limited in this conversation, fans have expressed support as he works towards regaining full strength and performance capabilities.

The Impact of Holland’s Rugby Foundation on His Wrestling Career
Ridge Holland’s background in rugby not only shaped his athletic mindset but also provided critical physical conditioning and discipline essential for his wrestling success. His story also highlights the strong influence of family and community in steering career choices, particularly within working-class towns where sports represent a meaningful opportunity.
As Holland continues to recover and prepare for future matches, his rugby roots remain a significant part of his identity, offering both motivation and perspective as he navigates the demands of professional wrestling.
