San Jose Police Department Monument: A monument to police officers who died in the line of duty was unveiled at the San Jose Police Department this past week. It was covered with white roses.

On October 4, a memorial event was held to dedicate the monument. Police officers and city leaders, including Mayor Matt Mahan, were there. This stone was raised in honour of the 13 SJPD officers who died between 1924 and 2016.

At the base of the memorial, which looks like an expanded SJPD police emblem with a black sash across the front, are plaques with the names of the police officers who died. A police officer named Michael Katherman was killed in an accident at Regional Medical Center in 2016, and another police officer named Michael J. Johnson died in a shootout in 2015.

As stated by an SJPD official, “The Fallen Officer Monument and the memorial we held for its unveiling celebrate the lives of the fallen and forever keeps them in our hearts and prayers.”

People who knew the officers were there to see the monument, which took more than eight years to build, unveiled it. People at the service carried blue candles to remember the dead, and some even put white roses in front of the plaques. Bagpipers played the traditional memorial hymn “Going Home”. At the same time, Mahan spoke to honour the cops’ bravery and sacrifice for the city and its people.
