San Jose Residents Turn In Uzi Rocket Launcher: In a proactive effort to enhance community safety and prevent gun violence, San Jose residents participated in a successful gun buyback event on the east side of the city. Hosted by Santa Clara County, the Sheriff, District Attorney, San Jose Police Department, and Santa Clara County Behavioral Health Services, the event saw more than 400 firearms voluntarily turned in by local residents. The weapons surrendered included an Uzi machine gun, a rocket launcher, assault rifles, 70 replica/airsoft/bb-style guns, 133 handguns, 275 rifles, 20 ghost guns, and more than a dozen assault-style weapons.
Participating residents received a total of $40,000 in cash as an incentive to turn in their firearms. The buyback event took place at Reid-Hillview Airport on December 2, drawing in residents from the 408 Area Code. Supervisor Otto Lee expressed gratitude for the community’s engagement and emphasized the significance of the ongoing initiative. Since May, over 1,100 guns have been collected through three buyback events in Milpitas, South County, and San Jose, contributing to efforts to save lives and prevent gun violence.
The weapons turned in are currently safely stored with the Sheriff’s Office before being sent for destruction. The success of the recent event highlights the commitment of the County of Santa Clara to proactive measures in addressing gun violence. Residents who missed the event but wish to relinquish unwanted firearms can utilize the Sheriff’s Office’s Gun Relinquishment Program by visiting their website or calling 408-299-2311. Another gun buyback event is scheduled within the county for 2024, providing continued opportunities for the community to contribute to creating a safer environment.
