Santa Clara County Drives Into a Green Future: Santa Clara County is embarking on an ambitious mission to revolutionize its vehicle fleet, aiming for a fully eco-friendly lineup by 2030. This Californian county has committed to achieving carbon neutrality, recognizing the urgency of addressing climate change. With over 27 million miles covered since 1998, equivalent to traveling to the moon and back 57 times, the county’s fleet is undergoing a substantial green transformation.
The transportation sector is a focal point, responsible for 60% of the county’s emissions. Program Manager Greg Beverlin is leading the charge, focusing on implementing charging infrastructure and closely monitoring emissions. According to Beverlin, “electrifying our fleet vehicles and providing charging station infrastructure can go a long way in reducing our impact on the planet.”
In response to mounting concerns about greenhouse gas emissions, Santa Clara County’s Facilities and Fleet (FAF) Department is swiftly moving toward sustainability. They are acquiring electric, hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, extending their efforts to law enforcement transport, including hydrogen fuel cell-powered buses for the Sheriff’s Office prisoner transport.
The FAF Department’s dedication has earned recognition, ranking as the sixth-leading fleet by the American Public Works Association (APWA) in 2023, a significant improvement from their 12th-place position the previous year. Facilities and Fleet Manager David Worthington commended the team, emphasizing their commitment to leaving a positive impact on the community and the environment.
The shift towards greener practices is not merely a corporate initiative but a sentiment echoed by individuals within the system. Automotive mechanic Edward Guillen expressed pride in contributing to Santa Clara County’s green initiatives, recognizing the positive impacts on the community and the environment. As the county propels its eco-friendly agenda, it stands as a beacon for sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
