Seth Rollins recently discussed the origins of his deeply personal and fractured relationship with CM Punk, which extends beyond their time in WWE. In 2004, the young Rollins sought to train under CM Punk, who operated a wrestling school in Chicago, but lacked the funds to do so. Despite this, Punk recognized a shared passion and personality between them and chose to mentor Rollins regardless.
As both wrestlers progressed, they found their way into World Wrestling Entertainment, the industry’s premier stage. During the early 2010s, CM Punk was one of WWE’s top stars and supported Rollins and Jon Moxley—known then as Dean Ambrose—by helping get them noticed within the company. Rollins recalled that Punk was once a genuinely supportive figure, allowing him to stay at his place and travel on his tour bus.
However, the relationship began to deteriorate when Punk left WWE amid controversies and publicly criticized the organization. While Punk distanced himself, Rollins, Moxley, and Roman Reigns remained committed to WWE, striving to keep the business thriving. Rollins described WWE’s Stamford base as his home, and said that Punk crossing that line was the moment their friendship effectively ended.
Seth Rollins Opens Up About His Efforts to Maintain Their Friendship
During a candid interview on Club Shay Shay, Seth Rollins detailed the breakdown of his connection with CM Punk. Rollins emphasized that after Punk’s departure from WWE, he repeatedly attempted to reach out, but Punk stopped responding and cut off their friendship without explanation.
“I would have done anything for [CM Punk], and then he just leaves the company. Basically, he completely ghosted me. He stopped being a friend. I reached out and tried to talk to him multiple times. There was never any animosity between us [initially] or a fallout between us. He just didn’t like the fact that I stayed working for [WWE]. I wasn’t the only one person he felt this way about—he lost a lot of friendships over this,” Seth Rollins said.
Rollins explained that Punk held grudges against several wrestlers who continued working for WWE, and this resentment significantly damaged many friendships. For Rollins, this divide became personal, as he and his peers invested years building their careers with WWE, only to feel their efforts were undermined by Punk’s criticisms after leaving.
Professional Rivalry Reemerges Despite Past Connections
The former friends eventually faced off as headliners on the premiere episode of WWE’s RAW on Netflix, where CM Punk emerged victorious. This event was significant for WWE, with Punk maintaining a heroic status among fans. Despite their history and personal issues, there remains a sizable fan base that supports Punk’s return to the company.
Rollins acknowledged the fans’ desire to see Punk back and suggested that business interests might one day override personal grievances. However, he also indicated that for the personal conflict between them to genuinely end, it would require both men to put their past entirely behind them and move forward, which remains uncertain at this time.
What This Means for WWE’s Future
The ongoing tension between Seth Rollins and CM Punk highlights the complexities of personal relationships within the high-pressure environment of professional wrestling. With both men established as key figures—Rollins as a longtime stalwart of WWE and Punk as a volatile, yet beloved star—their rivalry captivates fans both on and off screen. How they reconcile, or fail to do so, could influence future storylines and business dynamics within WWE.
For now, the rivalry remains marked by unresolved feelings and professional competition, underscoring how past friendships can be profoundly affected by contrasting choices and circumstances in the wrestling world.
