Simitian Symphony of Service: San Jose’s political landscape is undergoing a significant shift as veteran leader Joe Simitian throws his hat into the ring to succeed Anna Eshoo in Congress. With a career spanning 40 years in local and state government, Simitian, currently in his second term as a Santa Clara County supervisor, has long eyed a congressional seat. However, out of respect and support for Eshoo, he refrained from competing against her. Following Eshoo’s recent announcement of retirement after three decades in office, Simitian swiftly declared his candidacy.
The driving force behind Simitian’s political journey remains constant — the desire to improve the lives of those he represents. His extensive experience includes serving 14 of the 15 cities and towns in California’s 16th congressional district throughout his career. Starting as a Palo Alto Unified School District board member in 1983, he later held positions such as Palo Alto City Council member and mayor. Simitian’s commitment to public service led to his first term on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors from 1997 to 2000, followed by successful stints in the state Assembly and Senate.
His legislative achievements showcase a proactive approach to problem-solving. Notable accomplishments include legislation to establish transitional kindergarten in California (2010) and a law mandating hands-free use of cell phones while driving (2006). Simitian’s advocacy extends to teacher housing, mental health support, and environmental issues, notably leading efforts to keep the Lehigh Cement Plant permanently closed.

Simitian enters a competitive field, facing prominent Democrats like state Assemblymember Evan Low and former San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo. Other contenders include Palo Alto City Councilmember Julie Lythcott-Haims, former Saratoga Mayor Rishi Kumar, and tech founder Peter Dixon. Despite a substantial war chest, Simitian believes his extensive experience distinguishes him in a crowded primary field.
The primary, just three months away, will test Simitian’s ability to connect with voters and stand out in a diverse field. His campaign emphasizes a steady hand and a proven track record, positioning him as a seasoned leader ready to navigate the complexities of Congress. As endorsements from over 150 local elected officials roll in, Simitian’s fearless approach and commitment to public service will define his bid for Congress.
