Tommaso Ciampa Reveals Years of Talks Before WWE Exit

Tommaso Ciampa disclosed that his departure from WWE resulted from extensive discussions over several years at home. Last month, the former NXT Champion left WWE and shortly after signed with AEW, where he immediately made an impact by winning the AEW TNT Championship in his debut match. Ciampa emphasized he holds no ill will toward WWE, stating his exit was motivated by a desire to take a personal risk and invest in himself.

Deliberations at Home Leading to the Departure

Ciampa shared with Renee Paquette on AEW’s Close-Up that the choice to move on was shaped over a prolonged period of reflection. He explained,

“At home, honestly, it was less about just like looking forward to, ‘Oh, we’re doing this AEW thing,’ because it was a ton of uncertainty. Like our our decision to move on, we talked about that for months? I might even say a couple years, realistically.”

He made clear the conversations at home focused less on chasing a new wrestling opportunity and more on carefully weighing the timing and circumstances of leaving WWE.

Ensuring Financial Stability Before Taking the Leap

Ciampa stressed that arriving at financial security was crucial before deciding to leave WWE. He pointed out the risks and uncertainties of stepping away from a guaranteed salary into the independent wrestling scene, which involves unpredictable travel schedules and impacts on family life, including his wife and their son, Willow.

He detailed,

“But now I’m starting to go, ‘Yeah, I think we are at the point financially where let’s take the risk. And I’m not getting younger. Like you know, I don’t feel old. I feel great, I feel healthy. But it was one of them things where you’re like it just everything lined up. So our discussions were far more about real life than it was this dream. And while that was going on, a lot of work was being done in the dark. Like, preparation. Like, these are things — I don’t think anything that went down the last week between Dynamite and Collision was like full happenstance. The preparation was there. The conversations — the second they start, it’s, ‘Hey, I already have this music that I want. I already have this presentation that I want. This is what I envision my logo.’ So we did a lot of that work, it felt very flushed out.”

He recounted that when moving from NXT to WWE’s main roster earlier in his career, financial readiness was not in place, making risk-taking impossible at that time. The priority then was family stability, especially with a young child. Years later, the alignment of financial security, personal health, and meticulously planned preparations enabled him to confidently take the leap.

This calculated move allowed Ciampa to make an immediate splash in AEW, affirming his choice to bet on himself was a well-timed and thoughtful one.
