In a message read by Evans, Chapman acknowledged the significance of the award and extended thanks to the CMAs and country star Luke Combs, whose cover of “Fast Car” propelled the song back into the spotlight. This win marks a remarkable achievement, considering the song’s original debut decades ago.
Luke Combs’ rendition of “Fast Car” not only topped the Country Airplay chart but also made history, making Chapman the first Black woman to achieve this feat since the chart’s inception in 1990. Chapman, the sole writer of the song, also claimed the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Country Songwriters chart, a testament to the enduring appeal of “Fast Car.”
Reflecting on her unexpected presence on the country charts, Chapman expressed gratitude for the newfound success, stating, “I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there.” Combs, who received a CMA Award for his cover, reciprocated the sentiment, acknowledging Chapman’s impact on the genre.
“Fast Car,” the debut single from Chapman’s self-titled album, not only earned her a Grammy in 1989 but also solidified her status as a formidable artist with wins in multiple categories.
