Bron Breakker was initially scheduled to win the 2026 Royal Rumble and then capture the World Heavyweight Championship from CM Punk at WrestleMania 42. This storyline, revealed by journalist Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, was part of WWE’s plan following Seth Rollins’ injury at Crown Jewel, but it was canceled shortly before the event.
The original plan outlined a three-step storyline: Breakker would first challenge Punk for the title at the Raw Netflix anniversary show and lose, then win the Royal Rumble, and finally defeat Punk to claim the championship at WrestleMania.
“The injury to Rollins caused changes, as they went with Punk as champion with the idea of a three step program with Bron Breakker getting a title match on the Raw Netflix anniversary show and losing, coming back and winning the Rumble and then facing and beating Punk for the title at Mania,” Meltzer wrote.
Shift in Creative Direction Alters Breakker’s Rise
The initial storyline was designed to bolster Breakker’s status by showcasing his resilience—losing first but ultimately triumphing at WrestleMania. However, plans changed when Drew McIntyre advocated for a title win against Cody Rhodes in their highly anticipated Three Stages of Hell match. McIntyre’s push was based on his previous losses to Rhodes, which he felt warranted a victory to advance his own career trajectory—a move Rhodes also supported.
“Enter McIntyre, who pushed the idea that since he had lost multiple times to Rhodes, that it would be better for him to win the title in the already announced Three Stages of Hell match,” Meltzer noted. “Rhodes was on board with that idea.”
Revised WrestleMania Main Events and Title Scene
Following this change, McIntyre claimed the WWE Championship, effectively removing Breakker from the planned Rumble win and altering the WrestleMania landscape. With Breakker’s push sidelined, the spotlight shifted to the marquee matchups of Roman Reigns versus CM Punk and McIntyre facing Rhodes for the title.
“When the decision was made, they had to scrap Breakker winning the Rumble and the choices were either Rhodes or Reigns,” Meltzer added.
Implications for Breakker and WWE Storylines
Bron Breakker’s potential breakout moment was not simply postponed but completely eliminated due to the reshuffling of WWE’s top-tier storylines. This unexpected reversal underscores how injuries and internal decisions can rapidly reshape creative directions in professional wrestling, causing significant changes to planned character developments and title runs.
With McIntyre now positioned as WWE Champion and Roman Reigns continuing his high-profile feud, Breakker’s trajectory remains uncertain, leaving fans wondering when the NXT star will receive another opportunity for a major push. The situation highlights ongoing volatility in WWE’s booking decisions as the company navigates injuries and talent dynamics ahead of WrestleMania.
