Bryan Danielson recently shared insights on how the well-known backstage fight between CM Punk and Jack Perry at AEW All In 2023 unexpectedly paved the way for his surprise return to the ring. Despite not being medically cleared due to a broken arm he suffered in June, Danielson found himself competing in a Strap Match against Ricky Starks at AEW All Out 2023.
Danielson’s Injury and the Decision to Wrestle
During a conversation at Starrcast, Danielson acknowledged the disruption caused by the backstage incident and explained how it indirectly created the opportunity for the match. He revealed that although he was sidelined after his injury, the circumstances led AEW management to agree to his participation in the match.
And then, because I missed that [AEW All In 2023],
Danielson said.
And then there was an unfortunate incident backstage, I got to have an incredible Strap Match with Ricky Starks when I wasn’t even supposed to be wrestling [laughs].

Proposal and Execution of the Strap Match
Danielson admitted the Strap Match was his own idea, conceived to work within the limitations of his injured arm. He approached AEW officials with the concept as a solution to remain active inside the ring without risking further harm.
To be fair, my dumbass suggested it,
he remarked.
We’re kind of in a pickle here, and I said, ‘Oh, what could I do with my arm in the shape that it’s in right now? I can do a Strap Match.’
