Kazuchika Okada has set a new AEW record by extending his reign as AEW Continental Champion beyond 509 days, surpassing Jade Cargill’s previous record of 508 days as the TBS Champion. This milestone marks the longest championship run in AEW history to date.
Jade Cargill held the inaugural TBS Championship until her move to WWE in September 2023, establishing a benchmark that stood until Okada’s ongoing reign as AEW Continental Champion surpassed it.
Unification of Titles Elevates Okada’s Championship Status
At the AEW All In event in Texas this July, Okada became the first-ever AEW Unified Champion by combining the Continental and International Championships. He claimed the International title by defeating Kenny Omega in a recent pay-per-view, which was then unified with his existing Continental Championship.
AEW recognizes the continuation of both titles’ lineages despite the unification, as reflected on the official roster listing Okada under the Unified, International, and Continental Champions.
Okada’s Key Victories and Upcoming Defenses
Okada became the second AEW Continental Champion after defeating Eddie Kingston, the inaugural champion, on the March 20 episode of Dynamite last year. His reign as International Champion is approaching 30 days following his victory over Omega.
Looking ahead, Okada is scheduled to defend the Unified Championship against Swerve Strickland at AEW Forbidden Door in London, England, on August 24. This bout is highly anticipated as part of AEW’s international championship storyline.
Impact of Okada’s Record-Breaking Championship Run
Okada’s record-breaking reign not only surpasses Jade Cargill’s landmark days as TBS Champion but also elevates the prestige of the AEW Continental and International titles through unification. His continued defense of the Unified Championship positions him as a central figure in AEW’s competitive landscape moving forward.
