Rey Mysterio debuts new bearded look at WWE during the June 7th Worlds Collide event in Los Angeles, surprising the audience with a striking transformation after an extended absence. The Hall of Famer, who had been sidelined due to injury and recovering on hiatus, returned with a distinctive thick beard beneath his iconic mask, leaving fans and the WWE universe in awe.
A Triumphant Homecoming for the Wrestling Icon
The crowd in Los Angeles erupted as Rey Mysterio made his appearance following the opening ceremony at Worlds Collide, marking his return after being away since the April 18th SmackDown episode. Forced to skip WrestleMania 41 while rehabilitating a muscle injury, Mysterio has spent the intervening months focused on recovery. Despite being unable to compete recently, his surprising reappearance was met with enthusiasm and applause, underscoring his enduring popularity within the WWE community.
On this landmark night, Mysterio was also honored by the National Hispanic Media Council, receiving the Legend Impact Award in recognition of his cultural influence and storied career within the sport of professional wrestling. The dual celebration of his physical comeback and career achievement emphasized the significance of his presence at Worlds Collide.
A New Look That Leaves Fans Awestruck
What captured everyone’s attention was not only Mysterio’s return, but also his visually dramatic change. For the first time, the seasoned wrestler was seen with a full-grown beard, a feature never before displayed in his decades-long career under the mask. While Mysterio has occasionally appeared with a goatee, fans remarked on how his thick beard made him nearly unrecognizable, adding a fresh dynamic to his legendary persona. This bold style shift became an immediate talking point across social media platforms and in the arena, with supporters and commentators alike praising the new look’s intensity and emotional impact.

Rey Mysterio was originally set to face El Grande Americano at this year’s WrestleMania, but had to bow out due to lingering effects from his groin injury, leading to rising star Dragon Lee stepping in as his replacement. The momentous reveal of Mysterio’s new appearance, therefore, signified both a personal and professional milestone as he reintegrates into the WWE landscape.
The Meaning Behind the Mask: Mysterio’s Insights and Inspirations
Reflecting on his journey and the traditions he upholds, Mysterio recently shared a behind-the-scenes detail about his masks during an interview with GQ. He spoke about the importance of the mask in his career, its connection to Lucha Libre heritage, and his dedication to maintaining its symbolism over the years:
“I always gotta carry, two masks with me. These masks, I don’t wrestle in. These are masks that I do only for presentations, like right now. Different type of material compared to the one that I do wrestle in, but I always gotta rock at least two, sometimes even four, depending on how many days I’m on the road. My costume designer is from Osaka, Japan, and he gets down, man. Big ups to Hayashi. This one that I’m wearing right now is a collection of of four masks that were made by Hayashi, an idea that he created, inspired by the band KISS, and in the back of the mask, the lettering of Rey on the back.Ever since I found out what Lucha Libre was, my uncle Rey Mysterio Sr. wore a mask at the beginning of his career, and I always wanted to be like him. At the age of 14, 1989, I wore my first mask. I wore it all throughout 1990, maybe 99, which is when I lost the mask to Scott Hall and Kevin Nash. When I got signed for the first time with WWE, I came back with the mask. Since 2002 to now, I’ve been rocking the mask ever since.”
