San Jose Slow Tourism Recovery: A study found that San Jose’s recovery has been slower than other parts of the country, where the travel sector has not only returned but often surpassed pre-pandemic levels.
Team San Jose gave the City Council a report for the Fiscal Year 20212022 this month. This report highlights this concerning trend.
The report finds that the absence of conferences in San Jose hampers tourism recovery. Team San Jose facilities attendance is now at 54% of pre-pandemic levels, but spending at nearby establishments remains at only 25%.
Ben Roschke, VP of Research and Strategic Development for Team San Jose, explained the problem. He said that several conventions that supported the city’s tourism business pre-pandemic, particularly in the computer industry, no longer exist. The group is working to broaden its approach for more diverse conference attendance.
This week, a data streaming symposium boosted downtown San Jose’s tourism. One person, Michael from Germany, was there with his friend Tobias and discussed their activities in the city. Due to the meeting, they couldn’t research as much as desired but still got a feel for the area.
People from all over attend conferences, bringing foot traffic to nearby businesses and hotels. Petiscos, near the San Jose Convention Center, is a good example. David Costa, the head cook, said business was better during the week due to conferences.
Kevin Wick, a co-owner, believes that pop culture, technology, and anime conferences benefit Guildhouse, a venue for board games, video games, and business meetings. Due to these events, the place will always be crowded.
Matthew Martinucci, VP of Sales and Destination Services at Team San Jose, said the Bay Area’s crime and quality of life issues have hindered San Jose’s recovery. The city has long promoted itself as part of the Bay Area. The area’s reputation could be better.
Roschke mentioned that limited business and foreign travel hinder the city’s return to pre-pandemic conditions.
