Swerve Strickland on Five-Star Matches: Legacy Over Ratings, Always Memorable

Published:

Swerve Strickland aims to leave a lasting impression on wrestling fans every time he steps into the ring. Though widely recognized for his five-star matches, Strickland emphasizes that achieving high star ratings is not his primary objective. Instead, his priority is delivering unforgettable performances that resonate with the audience.

In a recent interview with Complex Sports, Strickland reflected on his journey to earning five-star acclaim. He noted that his recognition in this area only began after joining All Elite Wrestling (AEW) three years ago, highlighting the significance of these matches without placing undue importance on the ratings themselves.

I didn’t really have a five-star match until I got to All Elite Wrestling. So that’s just three years I’ve really been getting that kind of recognition,

Strickland explained.

I’ve heard, like, I’m the one Black wrestler with the most in history. So it’s something that I pride myself in — just putting on something that’s like a classic. I wouldn’t necessarily put stars next to it, but I do appreciate putting on something that people are just going to remember for a very, very long time. And if the stars come with that, that’s awesome. But I just want to make sure, like, when I leave the ring [I] put on a great performance and a great match.

Highlighting a Recent Five-Star Performance

One of Strickland’s most notable five-star matches, rated by wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer, took place this July at the All In: Texas pay-per-view event. Partnering with Will Ospreay, Strickland and Ospreay defeated The Young Bucks in a match that drew significant praise for its quality and excitement. This match added to Strickland’s growing legacy within AEW and wrestling history, particularly as a prominent Black performer noted for his in-ring excellence.

Recovery and Future Prospects

Currently, Strickland is recuperating following surgery to repair a torn meniscus sustained earlier this month. He has already begun physical therapy, showing a determined approach to returning to full fitness and competition as soon as possible.
