Tommaso Ciampa officially became part of All Elite Wrestling when he debuted on AEW Dynamite last Wednesday, less than two days after his WWE contract ended. He is scheduled to compete against Mark Briscoe on AEW Collision later that night for the TNT Championship, marking a high-profile start in his new wrestling chapter.
Initial Encounter with Tony Khan Leaves Strong Impression
In a recent interview with The Takedown On SI, Ciampa described his first meeting with AEW CEO Tony Khan, which took place just the night before his debut. Ciampa shared how he had long been interested in AEW and waited for the ideal opportunity to join. Meeting Khan backstage, he sensed a genuine enthusiasm and commitment to the sport, which made a powerful impact on him. Ciampa noted,
“Tony in particular has a contagious passion for professional wrestling. I loved meeting with him, I loved the energy that he shared. He cares a lot about his locker room, he cares a lot about his fan base. And man, I just it felt right. Everything about last night just felt like, ‘Hey, this is the place you’re meant to be.’”
Unprecedented Debut Presentation Exceeds Expectations
Ciampa also praised the production team behind his AEW introduction, highlighting the visual and auditory elements that brought his vision to life. He expressed overwhelming appreciation for the efforts of Mikey Rukus and Mike Mansury, who handled the music and Tron screen presentation. Reflecting on the experience, Ciampa said,
“That presentation, kudos to Mikey [Rukus] and Mike Mansury for the music and for the Tron, and all the effects and everything. Because that’s something that I was kind of working on on a vision board for quite some time. And it felt like somebody walked past me and looked at that vision board and just said ‘Yes to everything. Take it all.’ And that’s never happened in my career, ever. So to have that happen was just outrageous man. I still don’t think I’ve actually digested it all.”
Significance of the Moment and What Lies Ahead
Ciampa’s rapid transition from WWE to AEW and the enthusiastic reception from Tony Khan and the AEW locker room signal a significant career shift, positioning him as a key figure in the company’s roster. His high-stakes match for the TNT Championship against Mark Briscoe immediately places him in the spotlight, suggesting that AEW plans to capitalize on his talent and fan following. This debut not only fulfills a personal goal for Ciampa but also adds momentum to AEW’s growing competitive landscape.
