Anriel Howard, known today as Lash Legend in WWE, has forged a unique career path that began in the basketball arenas of Texas A&M and now plays out in wrestling rings worldwide. Between 2014 and 2017, Howard set a historic mark by becoming the first woman in Texas A&M history to secure over 1,000 rebounds, including a standout performance where she grabbed 27 rebounds in an NCAA Tournament game as a freshman, establishing a tournament record. After excelling at Mississippi State during her senior year, she was drafted by the Seattle Storm in the second round of the 2019 WNBA draft. However, soon after the draft, she was waived by Seattle, which led to an unexpected opportunity in the world of sports entertainment.
Before Howard could pursue a professional basketball career overseas, WWE reached out to recruit the 6-foot athlete from Atlanta for a tryout, opening the door to a new vocation. Although her debut with WWE was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, her transition from basketball shoes to wrestling boots soon became official under the ring name Lash Legend.
From Courtside Records to the WWE Spotlight
Lash Legend’s early days in WWE’s developmental program faced the obstacle of a global pandemic delaying her start, but her dedication to training matched her competitive spirit on the basketball court. She acknowledged the uncertainty of the new venture but trusted in her effort and commitment to merit success. Her breakthrough moment arrived recently at the Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia, where she outperformed all other women by eliminating the most opponents, signaling her emergence as a prominent figure in the wrestling community.
Returning to Texas for a high-profile match at the American Airlines Center in Dallas alongside teammate Nia Jax, Legend is set to compete for the WWE women’s tag team championships against the team of Rhea Ripley and Iyo Sky. Returning to perform in Texas, a place she calls her “second home,” adds personal significance to the title pursuit.
Building Bonds in the Locker Room and Embracing Her Texan Connection
While she hails from Atlanta, Lash Legend has formed strong ties to Texas, spending considerable time in cities like College Station, Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, and Austin. Her warm reception to the culture and community has made her feel deeply connected to the state.
She proudly remembers her visits across Texas and the people who influenced her journey, sharing,
“Yes, Hotlanta all day! But yes, I love Texas. Every time I come to Texas, I’m so like, ‘Yes, this is like my second home.’ Any part of Texas for the most part, honestly. I was in College Station, but I was in Houston a lot. I was in Dallas a lot. I was in Fort Worth. I was in Austin. So I met some amazing people in all these cities. So Texas feels good, and the food is good. I love me some Texas.”
Her connection to the state is genuine and enriched by personal experiences, such as keeping cowboy boots, a hat, and a belt buckle as mementos.
Within WWE, her relationship with veteran star Nia Jax has been instrumental. Lash Legend describes Jax as her “fairy god sister,” a supportive and wise presence in and out of the ring. The mentorship from Jax has smoothed Legend’s transition into the main roster and added enjoyment to her career advancements:
“I call her my fairy god sister, because she is just, she’s such a blessing. She is so fun, she’s so funny, she’s so wise. She’s helped me in so many ways, in and out the ring, and she’s been supportive before I even got to the main roster. But yes, she’s an amazing person, and she makes things so easy. It’s just such a seamless transition, and it’s just genuinely been fun for me, it really has. I’m grateful for her to help my journey.”
Competitive Spirit and Mutual Support in Personal and Professional Life
Lash Legend shares a unique personal connection with her fiancé, Trick Williams, who is also newly promoted to WWE’s main roster. When asked who is likely to claim a championship first on SmackDown, she emphasized their mutual encouragement and the shared nature of their aspirations:
“(Laughs) You know what? Y’all be petty when y’all ask stuff like that. Let me go ahead and tell you. Because in this household, we support each other no matter what, and honestly, if one win, we both win. So that’s how we look at it. If I win it first, he wins it first, and if he was the first, I win it first, and we both win.”
A Loyal Following and a Strong On-Screen Presence
During the Royal Rumble pre-show, a teasing remark from CM Punk coined Lash Legend’s fans as “Lash Holes,” but she swiftly addressed this playful jab with humor and pride in her supporters, who call themselves “Lash Techs.” She explained:
“(Laughs) First of all, he need a whooping for that, because what was that? It was funny, though. It was funny. When I saw that I said, ‘No, he did not say Lash Holes.’ … And it’s actually funny because I don’t know if y’all remember the viral moment from my tag team partner, it just made me think of that. But no, with the history of Lash Legend and her amazing lashes and her liking to lash out in arenas, my wonderful supporters call themselves Lash Techs. So I’m going to go with Lash Techs, not Lash Holes.”
Spirit Animal and Personal Drive Reflecting Her Resilience
Her competitive nature is symbolized by her chosen spirit animal. Initially, she identified as a bull during her Texas A&M days, aligning with her Taurus sign and stubborn determination. More recently, she relates more to the elephant, appreciating its size, strength, and the respect it commands in the wild, which parallels her current stance in wrestling:
“That is so funny. That’s funny that I said that because that makes total sense. So I’m a Taurus, as well. My birthday is May 6. We’re stubborn bulls, was what a lot of people liked to tell us, and I don’t disagree with it. But in my past few years, I’ve been feeling like I’m more related to an elephant. I feel like in the jungle, elephants are clearly the biggest, but also they’re the most respected. And a lot of animals don’t try them, per se. Every once in a while. But most of the time, they’re respected. And I feel like that’s just my position in life right now in the ring. So, yeah I think I’m rocking with elephants right now.”
Memories of a Record-Breaking NCAA Performance and Choosing Texas A&M
Reflecting on her record-setting NCAA game where she collected 27 rebounds, Lash Legend recalls how her relentless drive propelled her through the contest. Initially unaware of the milestone, she only realized she was about to break the tournament record late in the game when her coaching staff signaled her to return to the court to seize the achievement.
“You know, I was a freshman in college in the NCAA Tournament. And what’s so funny is I just had a motor, like I just would not stop. You put four girls on me, I’m just not stopping, and I guess it was just a classic case of that. Because I actually don’t remember until it was like, maybe five minutes left in the game, and my assistant coach, our associate head coach, tapped my head coach, and was like, ‘Hey, Lash is about to break the record.’ Because that’s been my nickname, Lashes. Anyway, they’re like, ‘Lash is about to break the record.’ And so then they put me back in, and I got like three more.”
Her decision to attend Texas A&M was influenced by then-coach Gary Blair, whose program left a strong impression during her official visit. She describes the moment of clarity she experienced that assured her Texas A&M was the right fit for her athletic and academic ambitions:
“I remember being on my visit out there, and something just clicked for me in that moment and I just knew this feels like the program that I want to be a part of. This feels like the university that I want to attend. It was just like a moment that just clicked while I was on my official visit, being brought out there, being welcomed, being hosted so well. And I felt like, yeah, this is the best fit for me. Pretty much all my schools that I took official visits to were all SEC. So, I knew the type of athlete I am that I needed to be in the SEC, and that was the one for me.”
