Brock Lesnar’s opponent for WrestleMania 42 has become a major source of speculation as WWE appears to have changed plans since the Royal Rumble 2026. Following a heated staredown with Oba Femi during the Royal Rumble event, fans expected a show-stopping match to be set in Las Vegas. However, recent reports show that the matchup is not finalized, leaving Lesnar’s WrestleMania direction unclear.
Royal Rumble Sparks Speculation but Plans Remain Unconfirmed
During the 2026 Royal Rumble, Oba Femi entered first and impressed by lasting 39 minutes before being eliminated by Lesnar with a devastating German suplex. The intense face-off between Lesnar and Femi generated one of the loudest crowd reactions, suggesting a blockbuster clash was in the works.
Despite this, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter explained that the Royal Rumble teasing Lesnar vs. Oba Femi was not a confirmed plan internally. Meltzer revealed,
“There was a tease at the Royal Rumble of Oba Femi and after the Rumble we were only told that it was not a sure thing yet. We do know that in the lineup in late January for the show, that Lesnar was listed as facing LA Knight. But in the Rumble, nothing memorable was done in that direction while the Lesnar-Femi face-off was set up to get a big reaction and actually got the biggest reaction of the show except for Brie Bella.”
Original WrestleMania Opponent Was Scheduled as LA Knight
Further insight came during Wrestling Observer Radio, where Meltzer clarified that the initial WrestleMania plan involved LA Knight as Lesnar’s opponent. He stated,
“The original plan that I was told — and this was before everything changed — LA Knight was the plan. That was the match that was scheduled.”
This confirms that LA Knight was not mere speculation but officially slated to face Lesnar before changes were made. These adjustments mark at least one shift in WWE’s booking direction concerning Lesnar’s WrestleMania role.
Creative Logic Behind Favoring Oba Femi for a High-Stakes Match
Meltzer also shared his perspective on the creative strategy, suggesting that from a booking standpoint, Oba Femi made the most sense as Lesnar’s WrestleMania opponent. He remarked,
“I had thought it would be Oba Femi, because if you’re looking at it from a booking standpoint, nothing makes more sense than Oba Femi beating Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania. That would be the move if you’re trying to make a new monster.”
Such a booking decision would serve to elevate Femi significantly by having him defeat a legendary figure like Lesnar on WWE’s biggest stage.
Current Status and What Lies Ahead
At this time, no official announcement has been made regarding Brock Lesnar’s WrestleMania opponent. The Royal Rumble tease indicates WWE is seriously considering Oba Femi for the match, yet internal documents from late January still listed LA Knight as the scheduled challenger. Dave Meltzer confirms that the original plan between Lesnar and LA Knight is no longer certain.
WrestleMania 42 is set for April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. While Roman Reigns’ World Heavyweight Championship match against CM Punk is confirmed, Lesnar’s placement and opponent on the card remain in flux. Fans and analysts alike await further information on where the company will ultimately position Lesnar.
The outcome of this decision will likely shape WWE’s storytelling in the months ahead, especially concerning new talent like Oba Femi and established stars such as LA Knight. Whether WWE opts to capitalize on the high-profile tease or revert to the original scheduling, the match’s direction will be closely watched.
